Importance of communication skills in children
Young children are constantly
developing both mentally and physically, their development regarding
communication is influenced by those around them. To get you message across to
a child may require more thought and skill than when communicating with an
adult because the child will not have as high a level of communication skills
themselves. In a learning environment children may respond more to other forms
of communication such as non-verbal types using pictures, sounds shapes or
visual aids is often helpful to keep a young child's attention or if their
communication skills are not developed enough for full conversation yet.
Having effective communication skills means more than just
knowing how to talk. Children often need guidance in learning how to interact
with others when speaking, writing and using electronic forms of communication.
Use role-playing to teach children how to communicate with peers and adults.
It's a fun and engaging way for kids to learn. Very young children often aren't
able to express their thoughts and feelings in words, or express them poorly.
Because of this, it's important that adults working with them can listen
carefully and help children to learn how to express themselves and also provide
what they need.
Children are 'social learners'
and learn by copying other people, so any adults working with them should model
good communication, both speaking and listening, so that children will learn
from them. Children need to know that they are being listened to and heard.
This helps them to build up a rapport and trust with adults and promotes better
relationships. The more you learn how to listen to children, the better you
will be able to assess their abilities and interests and plan for their next
steps in learning and development. You will also get to know them well and then
you can support their emotional needs by being in tune with them. The better
and sooner children learn to communicate, the more easily they will form
friendships and their confidence and self-esteem will increase.
How would you support your
children's learning about languages and communication? It is possible to
develop the art of language skills just by talking to your baby. Just go on
talking endlessly to your child! Share what you are planning to do in the next
ten minutes, what you are seeing outside the window and how you feel about the
weather outside. It is very critical for your baby to hear you speak some
language! Just pretend as if your child can understand what you speak to your
child. Other than parents even teachers, schools
in Chandigarh and all can develop this quality in children at a very young
age.
How to teach children geography
Do your children know where India
is? Or what the capital of Wisconsin is? Do they know where they could see
Ayers Rock and what language is spoken in Egypt? As computers and the internet
and air travel turn our world into a global village, it is more and more
important that we teach kids Geography. Whether your children are home schooled
or attend public or private schools,
the chances are you wish they knew more than they do about countries and people
and cultures.
An earthquake and tsunami in
Japan, unrest in Egypt or even uncle Joe going on vacation to Barbados - all
these events give you the opportunity to teach Geography. Grab a globe or an
atlas and get your children to look for the places in the news. Children love a challenge, and each time
they do it, they will get a little faster. Of course, this does mean you need a
good atlas or globe in your home! Or even a wall map. These items are easy to
find at places like Target and Office Depot and don't need to cost a lot.
Most kids love games. And there
are many great games available that are geography based. Your children will be
having so much fun playing that they won't even realize they are learning at
the same time. Some of kids’ favorite computer games are Geography-related -
not because they are about geography, but just because they are so much fun.
All the ones I am listing were / are played over and over again by my own
children. These are all really fun - your kids won't think about them as
'educational' - yet they are. If your family likes jigsaw puzzles, they are a
fun way to learn about different states, countries, continents and the world.
And working on jigsaw puzzles are also great bonding times as a family.
Movies are a great way to
experience Geography - you get to 'see' the places and people. There are great
documentaries that are very entertaining to watch, or you could watch a movie
set in a foreign country.
There is no better way to learn
geography than to see it yourself. And also a great way to learn about other
countries is to communicate with the people living there. You could look for
pen pals for your children. This will give them an in depth knowledge about a
specific country.
How to teach children about money
You don't have to be Warren
Buffett to raise a financially savvy kid. You don't even have to be good at
math. Then how do we do it? Establishing a conversation about dollars and rupees
and keeping it going as your child grows is a possible way. Parents are often
scared to talk to their kids about money. Some lessons mean admitting mistakes;
others signal unattainable goals. But the consequences of not imparting those
lessons on your own kids could be direr than ever. Unlike grandpa, who may have
a pension and employer provided health insurance -- most children now need to
understand much more than basic budgeting.
Kids will need to understand how
to save for their own retirement, manage health care costs and even cope with
diminished Social Security benefits. Sounds like this is jumping the gun? It's
not. Proper preparation of your children, even at a young age, can start them
down the path of a successful financial life. Children start learning about
money long before their first savings account, job or credit card. Begin the
conversation even before they're in boarding
schools by talking about work and money. Avoiding the subject until your
child needs a bank account can make the conversation hasty and confusing.
A trip to the grocery store is a
good time to explain price comparison, value and inflation. An ATM stop offers
a chance to explain that money doesn't actually come from a machine. You can
discuss earned income, investment returns and even inheritance. Opening bills is
a chance to talk about payment for services, credit card debt and interest
rates. Children need to be taught about debt, specifically loans and credit
cards. Talk about insurance with teens, especially as they learn to drive or as
you're selecting what health care options are available to your family. Children
should learn that money doesn't always need to be used for them. It can also
provide assistant to others. Don't just write the charitable check. Get the
kids involved in the process by asking them to pick and scrutinize charities.
What I call best school is one which teach children not
only academics but principles to lead a good life that includes value of money.Don't get frustrated because your
kids don't take your advice. Kids need to make some financial mistakes in order
to understand the consequences. Let kids set their own financial goals, say
financial advisers, or they'll never learn the basics and discipline.
Children and Mobile Phones
At some point, most of us decide
that our kids are ready for a phone so they can call when they get off the bus,
need a ride, or just check in. That's when you discover that it's nearly
impossible to find a phone with only the features you need namely, the ability
to receive and make phone calls.
While many experts say there is
no link between mobile phone use and cancer in adults there is still widespread
uncertainty about the risks children face. Research into health and mobile
phones has been beset with difficulties. Mobiles have been in use for a
relatively short time and yet cancers can take decades to develop. However most
scientists seem to agree about one thing that if mobiles are hazardous,
children are may be more vulnerable than the rest of us to their possible
ill-effects.

If you have a child older than 5,
you've probably already heard the plea. "Can I have a cell phone?"
your child asks. Or, "Why can't I have a cell phone?" No doubt about
it: Cell phones are a great way to stay in touch anytime, anywhere. But is your
child old enough for one? That's a tough call for many parents, because it's
not just about the child's age. So if you and your child are having this
debate, here are some considerations to keep in mind.
There are many benefits added to
it like you may also feel safer knowing where your kids are. And in an
emergency, a cell phone can be crucial if your child needs to reach you or vice
versa. But health hazards are also by products of it. Nothing like talk of
compromising baby brains to make you reach for the nearest hands-free device.
It’s best to proceed with caution even as we continue to learn more about how
cell phones affect us. There’s been some concern that the nighttime glow from
digital screens devices may cause depression, for example. Most young kids
don’t need a phone — the exception may be children with allergies or medical
conditions — but that changes once kids leave elementary
school.
Children aren't born knowing the
rules about how to use cell phones respectfully: including not using them to
spread rumors, not taking (or sending) photos without people's permission, not
sending inappropriate photos or texts, not having personal conversations in
public places -- and of course, never communicating with strangers, no matter
how they present themselves. So parents and teachers
and schools can make children come out this addiction to cell
phones.
