Social etiquette: The bigger idea

Have you ever been confused between how much of ‘follow your instincts' you should apply and how much should you abide by the social conventions? Well, we all do and we are sure you have been there and done just that! While you may want to go by your instincts, what then becomes unclear is whom are you offending on the process and how much of damage you are doing to your own success!
Read through this big picture to understand what the best International schools, especially in the city of Bangalore believe and teach to kids who thoroughly reach great heights.

Indian society is known to adhere to certain norms and regulations of the society. But the interesting thing is, how it considers these norms and cultures do actually shape the kids of tomorrow. Therefore, kids are expected to have good manners, ‘get up when elders come as a sign of respect’ and the like become the primary lessons for a child during his/her younger days. But why? Why do parents really insist on learning these etiquette?

Well! Social inclusion is the main reason. Since our society works on meeting the social expectation, parents train their children from the younger days to be a part of this abstract group. This way, the parent earns respect too. Your child is expected to imbibe these social etiquette for a greater cause. One: your child’s future will be greatly shaped by learning them and two: your child and you will both be greatly recognized amidst the peer group. The early years of the child are mostly spent with a blank mind. Nothing is written, or most aptly called tabula rasa. As experiences shape up, the slate starts showing your child’s pieces of art work.

But did you know that just before this shaping up period kicks start, there is a fair chance for you to take best advantage of your child’s personality making?  When the children are taught how and what to do and what not to do, you are sculpting the child to fit into the bigger world. He/she will start realizing what is socially acceptable and what is not. Does it seem too much? Its just that how a set of people religiously follow the etiquette while yet others believe it is too much to take. And that’s why we say, etiquette evolve with time to suit people.

Evolving with time

Yes! Etiquette evolve with time. While one set of people might argue etiquette are boring and nonsense, we can’t help but agree to the other side that pins and praises the beauty of good manners and matured behaviour. Honestly, nobody wants a group that just hurls, abuses and shouts at one another, because that is essentially what will happen to a group that is bereft of any norms or ‘rules’. Rather than merely reading them as ‘rules’, here is what they mean. These rules are not rules in the stricter definition of the word. They are merely the guidelines of behaviour and some accepted levels of deviance is only normal.

Etiquette Nurturing at School

Manners and etiquette are ranked as the most important lessons to learn during the nurturing period. And the ideal ground to learn would be in school. Some of the best schools in Bangalore, have been doing just that.  The added bonus? Some of the best international schools in Bangalore show you just the right proportion of etiquette and instincts to follow. That’s the power of schools. Etiquette then are the matrix of rules that govern our behaviour, both in social and professional lives. They inadvertently will reflect the cultural norm of your group or community. With the society becoming increasingly democratic, etiquette has become this whole bunch of cultural norm, manners and the rules of the society as a whole than merely being one part within it.

Etiquette enhance comfort?

One of the main reasons why etiquette is pinned for is, it gives you a sense of personal security. When you teach your child this, he/she becomes very comfortable and knows how to behave appropriately in any situation, while also making sure they protect the feelings and consider the comfort factors of the others in the society. This is one necessary trait to have. Etiquette will also break down any communication barrier, because now, both you and the person involved in the conversation have a stricter idea of what to speak and what not to. So, the barrier is essentially broken down. The etiquette that govern us are generally large in number.  Nurturing your child of this or helping his/her imbibe these from you as a parent or from the surrounding is only making him/her a better socially acceptable person of tomorrow. Truly, manners and etiquette never go out of fashion!
